Author of ‘It Was Never About the Books’ gives talk

The LIFE (Learning is for Everyone) group at San Elijo holds a free community lecture from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 17 at the San Elijo Campus of MiraCosta College, 3333 Manchester Ave., Room 204. Robert Pacilio, author and an award-winning teacher in San Diego, uses rock ‘n’ roll lyrics and films to help students unlock the power and mystery of literature. In his latest book, “It Was Never About the Books,” he shares vignettes of students who touched his heart, and whose paths he, in turn, changed inexorably. Pacilio will talk about the process of transitioning from teaching to writing and share examples of his work. Books will be available for sale. Community joins cancer prevention walk

Dozens of local residents of all ages joined a Breast Cancer Walk for Prevention and Wellness Fair at The Shoppes at Carlsbad, before the mall opened on a recent Saturday. The shopping mall hosted the Helen Knoll Foundation for its first such 5K event and wellness fair with a celebration presented by the United Breast Cancer Foundation. The walk raised money for early breast cancer screening and detection services supported by the nonprofit Helen Knoll Foundation based in Escondido.

Annual Christmas Boutique and Bake Sale

The Ladies of the Altar Society of St. Patrick Church at 3821 Adams St. will hold its annual Christmas Boutique and Bake Sale from 2 to 6 p.m. Nov. 18 and 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 19. There will be a large selection of Christmas decorations, along with new and used unique gifts and decorative items. Visitors can also check out the group’s homemade baked goods. Proceeds benefit the church community.

Community service camp for kids

A “Praise, Gratitude & Service” camp will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 20-22 at Alga Norte Park for ages 5 to13. The camp will include art, games and a community service project. Holiday Street Fair takes place Nov. 19

The 39th annual Encinitas Holiday Street Fair is from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. Nov. 19 with 450 vendors, plus a beer garden, three stages, and rides for kids. Coast Highway 101 will be closed from D Street to J Street, from 3 a.m. to 5 p.m. The beer garden will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Several bands will rock the Beer Garden Stage, the Lumberyard Courtyard Stage and the Hansen’s Community Stage. Parking is at Moonlight Beach, City Hall and side streets. Electra Bike sponsors a free bike valet service at each end of the festival at D and J streets. Visit encinitas101.com.

Tibetan monks visiting North County

Tibetan monks from the Gaden Shartse Phukhang Monastery in southern India will be visiting North County from Nov. 19-Dec. 3 as part of an 18-month tour of the United States. The primary purpose of the tour is to share their Sacred Earth and Healing Arts, to raise money for the daily needs of 1,700 monks and to provide for their university temples. While in Encinitas, the monks will construct a labor-intensive sand mandala at the Seaside Center of Spiritual Living, 1613 Lake Drive. The monks will be in the sanctuary from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sundays. The public is welcome to view the monks work on the mandala and ask questions. They will set up their arts and crafts tables in the sanctuary. Donations are appreciated. Literary festival Nov. 18 at library

The Oceanside Public Library and the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation host Write On, Oceanside!, an annual literary festival, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 18 to celebrate, showcase and inspire local authors. This year’s celebration at the Oceanside Civic Center Plaza, 330 N. Coast Highway, will feature dramatic readings, craft activities for kids, and workshops on blogging with Kristi Hawthorne, director of the Oceanside Historical Society, and writing memoirs with Oceanside memoirist and poet Sandy Carpenter. Every 30 minutes, the San Diego Zoo will randomly select one child to be an “honorary engineer” and receive a free train kit, with a whistle and hat. Electronic waste collection event to benefit veterans

Pechanga Arena will host an electronic waste collection event from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 15 with EnviroGreen Electronic Recycling Services in the parking lot at Pechanga Arena, 3500 Sports Arena Blvd. The event will be a fundraiser for Veterans Village of San Diego, which helps veterans with housing, health care and mental health counseling, among other services. Most electronic items will be accepted at no cost. A nominal fee will be charged for collection of some items, such as refrigerators. Paper shredding is $5 per “bankers box” and destruction of hard drives is $10 per drive.

Weight-loss support group holds open house

The nonprofit TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) group holds an open house for anyone interested in developing a healthier lifestyle at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 13 at St. Mark’s Methodist Church in the fellowship hall, 3502 Clairemont Drive. 800th anniversary celebration of Christmas Nativity

A communitywide celebration of the 800th anniversary of the Christmas Nativity scene created by St. Francis of Assisi is at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at Immaculate Conception Church, 2540 San Diego Ave., in Old Town. There will be a prayer ritual, consisting of readings and carols. Bring a figurine from your Christmas crèche to be blessed. A similar event is planned for 10:30 a.m. Nov. 18 at Old Mission San Luis Rey, 4050 Mission Ave., in Oceanside. Free food and supplies distribution

The Rock Church will host free distributions of groceries along with diapers and supplies for community members in need during November and December. Here are dates and times:

The nonprofit Lemon Grove Lions Club hosts a Fundraiser Cornhole Tournament at noon Nov. 19 at BNS Brewing & Distilling, 10960 Wheatlands Ave. Entry fee is $60 per team. Bring a partner too. Vista Wishing Tree set up for community

The annual Vista Wishing Tree is back through Jan. 1 at the corner of Beverly Drive and Wolverine Way for anyone to “share their hopes, dreams, faith and gratitude as a way to spread joy.” The tree was set up two years ago by a Vista resident as a place where love, joy, hope and kindness can be shared and witnessed. It is a place where words of gratitude are always welcome. There are tags and markers in the containers on the table by the Wishing Tree. Folks can write their message on the tag and hang it on the garland or branches of the tree.

Thanksgiving celebration at senior center

The Gloria McClellan Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive, is hosting a feast and activities in celebration of Thanksgiving starting at 11 a.m. Nov. 22 at the Park Terrace Café. Highlights include a turkey trot, monthly birthday celebrations and a traditional Thanksgiving meal served at noon. A $4 contribution is suggested for guests 60 and older; $8 fee for guests 59 and younger. Transportation can be provided for Vista residents ages 60 and older with 48-hour advanced notice. RSVP for the Thanksgiving feast by Nov. 15 at (760) 643-5288.
