Chamber marks 100th anniversary with gala
The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce celebrates its 100th anniversary with a Roaring Twenties-themed gala from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at Westin Carlsbad Resort & Spa. There will be refreshments, live music, dancing and games along with an auction. Community members are welcome to attend. Cost is $275; special pricing for tables. Tours offered at Leo Carrillo ranch

The 27-acre Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, weather permitting, and includes a visitor center in a barn, a theater with exhibits and historical film along with a gift shop and refreshments. Free guided tours are led by docents at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Meet at the welcome kiosk in the parking lot. Rotary puts on annual Oktoberfest

The Carlsbad Rotary Clubs’ 41st annual Oktoberfest Fall Festival is from noon to 8 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Carlsbad Strawberry Fields, 1050 Cannon Road. Highlights include German meals from Tip Top Meats, live German music and the Bavarian Bier Garten. The Bier Garten will feature a variety of Oktoberfest beers on tap and various wines along with a Stein-holding Competition, Musical Hut Spiel (German musical chairs) and Schnitzelbank (short rhyming verse songs). Attractions include a corn maze, tractor rides, bounce houses and a marigold field. There will be a petting zoo, corn hole, a kids zone, magic and science performances, and a do-it-yourself magic table. The fundraiser is hosted by the Carlsbad Rotary Club and Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club for Carlsbad charities. There is a $10 entry fee to enter into the Carlsbad Strawberry Fields. Parking is free. One Paseo holds Oktoberfest on Oct. 7

One Paseo’s annual Oktoberfest celebration features craft beers, live Hofbräuhaus music, lawn games and German-inspired bites along with the crowning of Mr. and Mrs. Oktoberfest from 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 7 on the lawn behind Harland Brewery at One Paseo, 3725 Paseo Place. City workshop discusses homeless residents

The city of Chula Vista will conduct a workshop at 4 p.m. Oct. 5 in the City Council Chambers, 276 Fourth Ave., discussing impacts and policies to address the state of unsheltered residents. Annual LobsterFest to benefit area nonprofits

The Del Mar-Solana Beach Rotary’s third annual Baja Style LobsterFest will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 14 in the courtyard of the Del Mar Hilton with live music, local craft beer and a tequila tasting for VIP sponsors along with a Baja-style lobster dinner created by Hilton Chef Ricardo Gutierrez. German American groups hold Oktoberfest

The German American Societies of San Diego host Oktoberfest in El Cajon for two weekends, Sept. 29-Oct. 1 and Oct. 6-8, at 1017 S. Mollison Ave. An opening day parade with keg tap and the crowning of the 2023 Oktoberfest Queen is at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 29. Enjoy authentic German food and German beers and liquors. Watch traditional folk dancing, compete in games and contests, visit vendor and craft booths, and bring the kids to the Kids’ Zone. Hours are 4 to 10 p.m. Fridays, noon to 10 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 9 p.m. Sundays. Entry fee is $15 for adults on Fridays and Saturdays, $5 on Sundays. Storytelling at museum

The Heritage of the Americas Museum hosts storytelling by Fred Thompson at 1 p.m. Oct. 7 about a day in the life of a Kumeyaay family. Thompson will illustrate the story with historical artifacts. The museum preserves and shares the art and culture of the original peoples of the Americas. Concert benefits Maui wildfire victims

A “Masters of Hawaiian Music” benefit concert will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 at La Paloma Theatre, 471 S. Coast Highway 101, to help Maui wildfire victims. ‘Savage Gardens’ exhibit runs through Oct. 29

The San Diego Botanic Garden hosts the traveling exhibition “Savage Gardens: The Real and Imaginary World of Carnivorous Plants” through Oct. 29 at 300 Quail Gardens Drive. The exhibit features hundreds of live carnivorous plants, along with bigger-than-life re-creations of several species, so visitors can learn about the plants up close from a bugs-eye perspective. The three large artistic installations will be in the Botanic Garden’s Dickinson Family Education Conservatory along with live plants that eat insects. Admission is $10-$18; free for garden members. Vista Hills Chorus recruiting singers

The Vista Hills Chorus is opening its rehearsals to singers for holiday performances. Hawaiian concert, dance benefits foundation

A Hawaiian concert at 6 p.m. Oct. 7 at The Ritz Theater will benefit the local nonprofit Pili Foundation, which promotes Hawaiian/Polynesian culture. The concert will feature a Hawaiian dance. Scarecrow Days are back in October

Fallbrook Scarecrow Days will be held Oct. 1-31. Scarecrows will be displayed at businesses and residences throughout Fallbrook. The ScareCREW, a volunteer group from the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce, assisted in designing and building scarecrows. The Oceanside Museum of Art holds its OMA Rising 2023 Gala on Oct. 28 at the Seabird Resort. Annual Paddle for Clean Water on Oct. 1

The 31st annual Paddle for Clean Water, hosted by the nonprofit Surfrider Foundation of San Diego County, is from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Ocean Beach Pier, 1850 Ocean Front St. The community gathering raises awareness and money to protect clean water and beaches throughout San Diego County. The noncompetitive paddle is open to swimmers and paddlers in all kinds of watercraft ranging from surfboards and stand-up paddleboards to kayaks. OB Oktoberfest returns Oct. 6-7

The Ocean Beach Oktoberfest returns Oct. 6-7 at the Ocean Beach Pier parking lot, 5099 Newport Ave. The two-day event will feature Oktoberfest-themed contests and games (a Mr. & Mrs. Oktoberfest competition, a traditional stein-holding contest), brat eating, and live music from local and nationally touring artists, including Afroman, Ballyhoo!, Paging the 90s, Band of Gringos. There will be a 4:20 happy hour and OFest drag show. Guests ages 21 and older can enjoy the beer garden featuring traditional German brews, local beer, wine and spirits. O.B.’s Veterans Plaza will be home to the family-friendly area organized by the Ocean Beach Mainstreet Association with vendors and Oktoberfest activities. Casa Familiar celebrates 50th anniversary

Casa Familiar celebrates its 50th anniversary from noon to 8 p.m. Oct. 7 at Waterfront Park, 1600 Pacific Highway, with Casa Fest 2023, a music and arts festival featuring musical performances by Mara Sulu with Revival, Liquid Blue, Mariachi Internacional de San Diego, La Diabla, La Ronda Machetera, and Nortec Collective: Bostich + Fussible. Taste of North Park set for Oct. 7

Taste of North Park, the 12th annual celebration of the neighborhood’s food-and-beverage scene, is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 7 featuring more than 40 area restaurants, breweries, cafes and retail stores, including Michelin Guide-recognized Mabel’s Gone Fishing. Free family-oriented nature hike

A Mission Trails Regional Park guide will lead a free family-oriented wildlife tracking nature walk on the Oak Grove Loop Trail from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Oct. 7. Hikers will learn how to identify tracks and other signs left behind by the park’s seldom-seen wildlife. Walks start from the front of the Visitor Center on the first Saturday of every month at 8:30 a.m. No reservations required. Wear hat, long pants and closed-toe shoes and bring water. Free guided nature hikes at Mission Trails

A Mission Trails Regional Park guide leads free nature walks starting at the Visitor Center, 1 Father Junipero Serra Trail, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays with information on the plants, animals, geology, history and ecology of the park. Foundation holds Breast Cast exhibit, auction

The Keep A Breast Foundation hosts its 2023 Breast Cast Exhibition and virtual auction from 5 to 10 p.m. Oct. 7 at Fall Brewing Co. to mark Breast Cancer Prevention Month. The event features 20 breast sculptures created by breast cancer survivors, local artists and community members. The opening night and virtual auction start on Oct. 7, with the auction taking place on Instagram via @brewbiesfest. Volunteers sought to join crisis team

The Trauma Intervention Programs of San Diego, aka TIP, is looking for volunteers to join crisis teams and support trauma victims at emergency scenes. TIP is especially in need of volunteers in East County communities along with National City and Coronado. No experience is necessary; training will be provided. Harvest festival coming up

The San Marcos Chamber of Commerce presents its annual 31st Harvest Fest with more than 200 artisans, crafters, retailers and nationwide vendors along with a beer and wine garden and live entertainment on two stages is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 8 on Via Vera Cruz, between San Marcos Boulevard and Grand Avenue. Antique buffs gather for meeting

El Camino Real Questers will meet at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Lake San Marcos clubroom, 1105 La Bonita Drive. The program will be on “Designs of Maureen Love Calvert.” Questers is an international organization that fosters an appreciation of antiques and collectibles, and encourages the restoration of antiquities and historical sites. Formerly homeless fitness entrepreneur shares story

Jeannine Coulter, a fitness entrepreneur and host of “Chasing Heroine: An Addiction Recovery Podcast,” will give a presentation at 6 p.m. Oct. 9 in the University Student Union Ballroom as part of California State University San Marcos’ Arts And Lectures Program. Coulter will share her personal story of addiction and homelessness and her recovery journey that embraced physical exercise, gratitude and spirituality, in hopes her story will help others. Fire Department holds Open House

The Santee Fire Department kicks off Fire Prevention Week with its annual Santee Fire Department Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 7 at Station 4 at 8950 Cottonwood Ave. Firefighters will give demonstrations and tours. Seacrest Foundation recognizes efforts to help elderly community members in need

The Seacrest Foundation recently held its 211 Club Patron Recognition Party to bring together community members who support the care of elderly residents in need at Seacrest Village Retirement Communities and through the Seacrest at Home program. Patrons of The 211 Club are known as “Visionaries of Jewish Eldercare,” who have made made individual contributions of $1,000 annually for the charitable care of frail and elderly community members in financial need. The evening event, which has not been held since 2019 because of the pandemic, was held at the Solana Beach home of Mayo and Jeffrey Strauss, owner and executive chef of Pamplemousse Grille in Solana Beach. The celebration, which included cocktails, hors d’oeuvres dinner and sweet treats, drew 150 guests. Visit seacrestvillage.org/seacrest-foundation.

Fashion show and luncheon benefit neurological research

The San Dieguito Chapter of the Brandeis National Committee will hold a fashion show and luncheon fundraiser, presenting fashions from Chico’s, on Oct. 10 at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club, 1505 Lomas Santa Fe Drive. Before the lunch, there will be vendor shopping starting at 10:30 a.m. from six additional stores and boutiques. The luncheon and show are at noon. Proceeds benefit the Brandeis University BNC Sustaining the Mind Fund, which supports scholarships and research in neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. Cost is $55. Hispanic heritage exhibit at museum

The Valley Center History Museum celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with an exhibit featuring the first families of Valley Center and Pauma Valley. The exhibit honors Jose Maria Orozco and his wife, Guadalupe Alvarado, who were given 13,298 acres in 1845 and settled on land they named Rancho Guejito; and Jose Antonio Serrano and his wife, Rafaela Aguilar, who were deeded 13,310 acres of land in 1844 and developed property they called Rancho Pauma, according to the museum’s records. Both land grants were issued by the then governors of Mexican California, Pio Pico and Manuel Micheltorena. Visitors to the museum can also learn about Julian Nava, “the first Mexican American named to serve as United States Ambassador to Mexico,” and Maria Juana de Los Angeles, “one of only 12 women among 800 men who was granted an 1845 Mexican Land Grant she called Rancho Cuca.” The museum is open noon to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays at 29200 Cole Grade Road. Woman’s Club hosts founder of Angel Faces

The Woman’s Club of Vista will meet at 10 a.m. Oct. 11 at Shadowridge Golf Club. The guest speaker will be Lesia Cartelli, founder and CEO of Angel Faces, a national nonprofit that provides healing retreats and ongoing support to girls and young women with severe injuries from burns or trauma. Angel Faces is among the nonprofits the Woman’s Club of Vista supports. The club marks 107 years of service in the community and is a member of the international General Federation of Women’s Clubs. Garden club to hear presentation on ‘fat plants’

“Growing Caudiciform ‘Fat Plants’” will be the topic of a presentation during the Vista Garden Club meeting Oct. 6 at the Jim Porter Recreation Center, Brengle Terrace Park, 1200 Vale Terrace Drive. The speaker is Al Klein, owner of Botanic Wonders Nursery, who specializes in cycads, rare succulents and other exotic plants. Veterans Art Project holds open house, potluck

Locally based nonprofit Veterans Art Project hosts a free Raku Night and open house with a potluck dinner for service members, their families and caregivers from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 13 at 2422 Cades Way.
