Coquitlam Search and Rescue (SAR) came to the aid of a kayaker with a broken ankle on Twin Islands Sunday, CityNews has learned.
Four kayakers went out to the islands Saturday night, where they spent the night at a campsite, search manager Ray Nordstrand says.
As they were camping, one of the four fell and twisted and broke her ankle.
Coquitlam SAR got a call Sunday morning asking to pull her out of the area.
“We sent our boat out to the area with four of our members,” Nordstrand said.
“We were able to stabilise her ankle, put her into the boat, bring her back to Rocky Point Park, and hand her off to the ambulance.”
She was sent to a local hospital for futher treatment on her leg.
Nordstrand says it was fortunate the kayakers were still in an area with cell coverage. He advises that anyone going into areas of the wilderness without cell coverage should use technology capable of communication via satellite. As well, make sure to have the right gear in case something happens.
