The city of Napa could get a Costco in the near future.
According to the Napa Valley Register, a liquor license application placard was recently hung on the chain link fence at 1025 Kaiser Road, the site that has been rumored to become a Costco since early 2020. Any business that intends to sell alcohol must post this sign at the proposed site of business.
The news is a signal that this project might finally be moving forward after delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. A Costco spokesperson emailed SFGATE saying the company does not comment on upcoming Costco projects until about two to three months ahead of opening. It is not currently listed on the slate of Costco sites that will open by the end of this year. A Costco in Newark, California, is scheduled to open in October 2023.

The potential Costco site is historic to the Napa area. In 1941, Al Streblow converted his Basalt Rock Company into a defense contractor company during World War II and constructed boats for the Navy. After the war, the company was contracted to make piping to bring water from the Lake Hennessey reservoir to the city of Napa. Soon after, the company was renamed Napa Pipe and “the plant would make enough pipe to ring the globe” over the next 50 years, according to the Napa Valley Register. The plant closed permanently in 2004, and the site has remained vacant until now.
The new Costco is part of a larger project, spearheaded by Napa Redevelopment Partners, which aims to also bring new housing to the area. Along with the new Costco, the Napa Pipe site is expected to feature 945 residences, a Napa Valley Vine Trail pitstop, a hotel, a beach club and more, according to the Napa Valley Register.
