DESOTO COUNTY, Fla. — Born on the side of a rural highway, one-week-old Kylei Nembhard has a story to share for the rest of her life.

Kaneisha and Decardo Nembhard were expecting their fourth child earlier this month. Already having three kids, Kaneisha didn’t want to spend hours in labor at the hospital so she waited as long as possible to hit the road.

“I was just like, oh no, so I’m staying home till I can’t take it no more, but I didn’t know I stayed that long,” she recalled. “It still amazes me, I had a baby in the car, like what?”

It was 10 p.m. on September 13.

“We get on the road going to ShorePoint, ShorePoint. I put it in GPS it says 35 minutes,” Decardo describes. “Halfway to, she was like, I think I’m having the baby.”

On the side of King’s Highway, with no doctor in sight, Kylei was born.

“Went down to a safe spot,’ Decardo explained, “and ran around, and at that point, she was pushing out the shoulders and everything so the legs was hanging there, so I pulled the rest of the baby out.”

“I can’t even remember half the stuff that happened? Me? No medicine? Nothing,” Kaneisha said with a laugh.

First responders weren’t far behind the couple.

“I just see a car on the side of the road. No traffic, nothing, and pretty much just when we pull up, get out of the truck, get the stretcher.. and we see the passenger side door is open, and there’s a little baby sitting there in the passenger seat,” firefighter Anthony Rodriguez said.

“All I do remember is when she was out,” Kaneisha said while laughing at her husband, “he did come around, and he went in the truck to get a blanket and was like, I’m going to make sure the mosquito don’t get her.”

Because of their girl’s grand entrance into the world, the Nembhards are planning to keep the orange Dodge Charger as a gift to their girl when she’s old enough to drive.

“So I know it’s going to be 20 years,” Decardo said.

“I told him cars are going to fly by the time he’s talking about saving her that car,” Kaneisha smiled.

Mom, dad and baby are all home and healthy now. The orange Charger sits in the front yard – part of a story they’ll never forget.

“He left me in the hospital the next day to get his car cleaned,” Kaneisha joked.
