FORT MYERS, Fla. — A thief stole credit card information from customers at a RaceTrac gas station in Fort Myers off Alico and Lee Road.
Deputies said the thief used a device called a credit card skimmer. It attaches to a card reader and copies your credit card information.
A police report stated a man was about to pump gas just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday when he noticed a small gap between the pump and the keypad.
He pulled on the keypad and a skimmer device came right off. He went inside to tell a manager and they called 911.
Deputies are currently investigating. It’s unknown how many credit card numbers were collected on the device.
Anthony Horta is a regular customer at this RaceTrac gas station.
“That is crazy, I actually come here almost every day to get some gas so that’s quite frightening. I might not come back here ever again honestly, that’s a little scary,” said Horta.
Arturo Vargas said this isn’t the first time he’s heard of something like this.
“Out here it’s pretty common, some of the people I work with they’ve been talking about it a lot lately. I definitely will probably end up getting cash — will probably be a safe bet for now…times are crazy nowadays,” said Vargas.
