LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. — A dash cam captured a video of kids sitting in the road at a Lehigh Acres bus stop. Now people say a lack of supervision is to blame. 

“I think the parents need to be more responsible with that,” said Gloria Cuquvas, who drops her grandchildren off at the bus stop to make sure they’re safe. 

“It’s more happiness in your heart when you take your child to the stop sign and you know that child gonna be safe,” Cuquvas explained. 

After seeing the video of a car having to swerve out of the way to avoid hitting kids sitting in the road, she was shocked. 

“I had shivers in my body when you told me that. It’s hard to see something like that, but it’s hard to see a parent not have concern for that child,” said Cuquvas. 

Rob Spicker with the Lee County School District said it’s crucial for adults to be at their kids’ bus stops. 

“If they get a little too close to the street, as the adult you can help back them up. We can reinforce that message, but we really need you as parents and guardians to be the first deliverers of we need you to be safe at the bus stop,” Spicker explained.

Seeing kids in dangerous situations at a bus stop brings up painful memories from when eight-year-old Layla Aiken was hit and killed by a driver back in 2019 in Cape Coral.

After her death, volunteers put benches at dozens of bus stops around Lee County to give kids a safe place to sit away from the road, but most of those benches got warped by the elements and are now gone.

“Please be careful, please be aware. You’re putting lives at risk if you think you can just speed around through a neighborhood or around a bus stop,” Spicker emphasized.
