It just got a lot more difficult for visitors to find parking in Deep Cove.

The District of North Vancouver has voted to slash the number of unrestricted parking spaces in the small waterfront community from 770 down to just 170.

The move comes in response to complaints from residents who have had long-standing issues with parking in the area during the summer months.

“Deep Cove experiences seasonal parking pressures that require parking management strategies to improve experiences for all users,” transportation planner Mac Fitzgerald wrote in a report to council.

“In response, additional time limited parking locations are recommended in the Village Core to increase the number of parking opportunities near destinations.”

Currently, 770 of the 910 on-street parking spaces are unrestricted. After the change, only 170 will be unrestricted. As for the remaining spaces, 110 will be time-restricted, 280 will be time-restricted or available to residents only, and 350 will be for residents only.

“As a whole, the proposed on-street public parking management strategy reflects a near-term measure to target known parking challenges, that can be implemented quickly without preventing any potential further investment in parking management tools in the future,” the report says.

Time-limited spaces will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Council says the changes are set to be implemented by this summer.
