The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop at San Francisco International Airport Wednesday morning due to the airport’s ongoing runway construction.
According to FlightAware, there have been 92 delays at SFO so far today — largely impacting flights on United Airlines and SkyWest Airlines —while 46 flights have been cancelled, mostly from United and Alaska Airlines flights.
When airport officials announced the runway project, they warned that the closure could cause delays of up to an hour for up to a third of the airport’s flights for the next five months. However, due to poor weather conditions Wednesday morning, the anticipated delays turned into an hourlong ground stop that began at 9 a.m.

“In our current case, this is a combination of the runway closure along with weather conditions … southeasterly winds requiring us to take off and land in a different configuration than the norm,” SFO spokesperson Doug Yakel told SFGATE in an email.
Earlier Wednesday morning, the FAA noted in its Daily Air Traffic Report that “low clouds and rain may slow flights” in several airports across the U.S., including SFO. At time of writing, the National Weather Service reported that most showers Wednesday would be before 4 p.m. and a 40% chance of showers throughout the day.

The runway project will realign two taxiways that aircraft use to exit the airport. SFO expects to complete the construction in July.
