SANIBEL, Fla. — The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation is conducting a survey to learn about whether or not mangroves help lessen the impacts of Hurricane Ian in homes close to the shoreline.
Almost a year ago, Southwest Florida experienced catastrophic property damage following Hurricane Ian. Researchers are trying to find out if mangroves and coastal dunes reduce those impacts.
Mangroves are natural barriers that help protect infrastructure along the coast.
Mangroves are known to not only stabilize Florida’s coastline ecosystem but also help protect infrastructures during storm surges or extreme weather events.
Property owners, renters and businesses are encouraged to participate in the 10-minute survey.
The survey will remain open through Sept. 28. SCCF Pfeifer Conservation Fellow Thomas Ankersen will be writing a short policy brief highlighting the role of mangroves as storm protection that will include these results.
