LATEST Aug. 20, 4:53 p.m. According to a source with knowledge of the situation, a power outage was the cause of the ride stoppage and the evacuation, which temporarily impacted Paradise Pier. The situation has since been resolved and Paradise Pier has reopened amid the most intense rainfall expected Sunday in Anaheim.

Aug. 20, 4:20 p.m. Warning sirens blared on Sunday afternoon as Disneyland’s Paradise Pier in Disney California Adventure was entirely evacuated as Tropical Storm Hilary hammered the park.

Guests came streaming out of restaurants, including the pier’s Lamplight Lounge, and the Incredicoaster was stopped mid-ride as guests sat in a torrential downpour for almost 10 minutes until rescue crews scaled the ride and were able to manually release riders’ safety restraints and lead them off to safety.

It was unclear what triggered the evacuation, which began around 2:26 p.m., as two major events affected the park within 15 minutes of each other: After wading through a steady downpour for much of Sunday morning, park-goers were drenched by Tropical Storm Hilary starting at around 2 p.m. The Incredicoaster was evacuated twice in the early afternoon, with the second time followed shortly after by sirens and a host of cast members directing people off the pier. Just 15 minutes after the evacuations began, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake — centered near the city of Ojai, a full two hours northwest of Disneyland — was recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Anaheim was set to receive just under 2 inches of rainfall on Sunday, with gusts of wind reaching up to 26 mph. Several rides were closed at the park’s opening, and sand bags and rain ponchos were a common sight in Downtown Disney.

Disneyland announced both parks would close early Sunday: Disneyland at 10 p.m., and California Adventure at 9 p.m., one hour earlier than usual. Downtown Disney was set to close at 11 p.m. due to the storm, while Disneyland’s three hotels were scheduled to remain open.
