Employees at the Residence Inn by Marriot in downtown Vancouver issued a 72-hour strike notice Monday after reported weeks of contract negotiations.
The union representing more than 70 of the hotel workers, Unifor, says they’ve been fighting to improve workloads, benefits and wages.
After a unanimous vote, the union announced Monday its intention to strike as soon as Aug. 1 if their demands are not met — just days before what is expected to be a busy long weekend in Vancouver.
“The union members at the Residence Inn could not be more serious when it comes to fighting for fair wages that reflect the high cost of living in the Lower Mainland,” said Lana Payne, Unifor National President.
The union says it’s been at the bargaining table since July 15, but “despite progress on non-monetary issues,” it says “significant differences remain” on wages.
The Residence Inn by Marriott is reportedly operated by SilverBirch Hotels and Resorts, a hotel management company purchased by Leadon Investment in 2017.
The Union says the employers must respond by noon Thursday to avoid the job action.
