B.C.’s transportation service says nobody was injured when two large rocks fell onto the road on Highway 4 on Christmas Day.

The highway was then closed in both directions on Christmas Day — stretching into Boxing Day — on a 10.4-kilometre stretch between Cathedral Grove Provincial Park and Cameron Lake, which is east of Port Alberni, according to DriveBC.

“In late afternoon on Monday, Dec. 25, two large rocks dislodged from the side of the bluff, hit the rockfall barrier, and fell into the travel lanes,” the service said in a release.

“There were no injuries. At first light on Dec. 26, a geotechnical assessment was completed and maintenance contract crews were subsequently cleared to begin cleanup and replace the roadside barrier.”

Just before noon Tuesday, DriveBC said repairs were complete and scheduled the road reopening for 2 p.m.

This closure is in addition to delays caused by roadside brushing on a 12 km stretch between Green Point Park Access Road and Tofino-Ucluelet Highway, expected to last until Dec. 31. Single-lane alternating traffic will be in place until the end of the year, and DriveBC says delays will be “minor.”
