Given one more chance to wear their school uniforms, a trio of Eastlake High School players were among the top baseball standouts taking the field at Petco Park on Wednesday for the sixth annual Padres High School All-Star Game.

Senior catcher Noah Betanco was named to the East squad along with senior outfielder Jacob May and junior outfielder Angel Laya.

All three players made contributions during the game and the home run derby which preceded the contest, which the East led 10-3 through at press time seven innings.

“I’ve been dreaming of playing in this game since I was in middle school,” said Betanco, a three-year varsity letterman and a first-team All-CIF selection who led the Titans this season in batting (.440), home runs (six) and RBIs (33).

Betanco got his afternoon off to a good start. Upon learning he was participating in the home run derby prior to the game, Betanco led off the derby with four home runs in the first round, qualifying him for a final-round matchup against La Jolla County Day shortstop Jack Circuit.

Each player hit three home runs during the two-minute final round, but Betanco also had four warning-track hits and totaled 27 points for the two rounds to edge Circuit by three points for the derby crown.

Betanco, who has committed to Cal State San Bernardino, didn’t start the All-Star Game. He entered as a substitute and flew out to right field and walked in two plate appearances.

Laya, a junior who has committed to Oregon, singled up the middle in the top of the first inning when the East scored the first run of the game. May, also a first-team all-CIF pick, singled and scored in his second at-bat to help the East plate three runs in the top of the third inning for a 5-1 lead.

Eastlake won the Metro Mesa League championship with a 9-0 record and took a 13-game win streak into the CIF Open Division playoffs, but losses to Rancho Bernardo and Cathedral Catholic ended the season quicker than the Titans would have liked.

Eastlake finished the season with a 22-7 record, but Betanco, May and Laya were able to don their school’s uniforms one more time five weeks after their season ended to participate in the Padres All-Star Game.

“It feels good to put on this uniform again,” said Betanco, who took a break from his college camp in Redding and made a quick plane trip from Sacramento to be in San Diego for the All-Star Game, which featured 48 of the San Diego Section’s top prep players taking the field following the Padres’ 8-5 win over Washington.

Calexico first baseman Andres Ontiveros made the most of his journey from the Imperial Valley as he slugged a solo home run to right field in the second inning and added a single in the fourth for the East squad.

Cathedral Catholic catcher Eli Selga also accounted for a home run when he hit a line-drive shot to right field for the West to cut the East lead to 5-2 at the time.

The head coaches were Oceanside’s Dave Barrett for the West squad and Chris Lamb of Scripps Ranch for the East.
