Owners Reilly and her husband, Robert Nahas, have retired, according to a sign posted on the bakery’s door spotted by Lookout. The sign also stated that “an opportunity was presented by a Westside local and longtime regular customer” for the space. A cannabis retail facility is under city review for the bakery’s address at 1129 Mission St., according to planning documents.
Despite the closure, Lookout reported that the owners are holding on to the bakery’s name and recipes, suggesting that their baked goods might one day be available again at “a local food truck.” SFGATE could not reach Emily’s Good Things To Eat for comment in time for publication.
Emily’s Good Things to Eat has been a pillar of Santa Cruz’s Westside since 1982, known for its muffins, croissants, scones and sandwiches. Reilly was the mayor of Santa Cruz from 2002 to 2003 and from 2006 to 2007. In recent years, though, the bakery was embroiled in controversy. In 2015, a former employee brought a sexual harassment suit against Nahas, and seven other former employees came forward with similar allegations, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Emily’s Good Things to Eat settled the suit out of court in 2016.
