Tropical Storm Emily has formed in the eastern Atlantic

As of the 11am advisory Sunday, Emily has 50 mph sustained winds. It is moving to the WNW at 10 mph, and is located about 1000 miles to the WNW of the Cabo Verde Islands.

Emily is the fifth named storm of the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane season, and the 6th storm overall. It is forecast to continue on a WNW track into the central Atlantic, likely becoming a non-tropical low by early next week.

Emily joins previously named Tropical Depression 6 in the Atlantic. Tropical Depression 6 is forecast to dissipate east of the Caribbean Monday.

There are also a number of other disturbances in the Atlantic with a chance to develop into tropical depressions or tropical storms in the coming days as well:

– A tropical wave moving westward across the Gulf of Mexico could become a short lived tropical depression or storm prior to moving into Texas later this week.

– A disturbance in the eastern Caribbean is expected to become a tropical depression or tropical storm in the coming days as it moves to the WNW toward and over Hispaniola. From there it will head for the central Atlantic.

– A tropical wave near the Cabo Verde Islands has a medium chance to develop as it moves to the WNW this week. Once it moves past the islands, it is not expected to impact any land areas.

While none of these disturbances are expected to impact Florida, this uptick in activity shows that the peak of hurricane season is fast approaching. Make sure you have a plan in place if and when a storm threatens our area, and stay tuned to ABC7 as we will continue to track the tropics around the clock.
