Emmerdale‘s Lisa Riley has admitted to ‘self-medicating with alcohol’ after the death  of her mother.

The actress, 48, who went teetotal nine years ago, added that she was ‘drinking two bottles of wine a night’ before giving up alcohol. 

Speaking on Thursday’s Lorraine, Lisa, who plays Mandy Dingle on the ITV soap, told host Ranvir Singh: ‘I prefer me now I’m sober.

‘I was self-medicating with alcohol after losing my mum. A bottle and a half, two bottles of Malbec helped with those times. It was a game I played.’

She previously said she ‘blamed’ the partying for not spending quality time with her mother, who passed away from cancer in 2012.

It comes after it was revealed Lisa has signed a ‘long-term’ contract to keep her on the ITV soap.

The actress shared her excitement as she confirmed her future on the show in a recent interview with Woman’s Weekly magazine.

She said: ‘I’ve just signed a new long contract and I’m very happy.

‘Paddy and Mandy bring such joy to the show – you can rely on the fact that they’re going to bring you that sprinkle of fun and I love that.

‘It’s 25 years since they married the first time and I’d like to think that I’ll still be in the show in another 25 years – I absolutely love it.’
