PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Matthew Hanson was shot and killed by his neighbor over fireworks on Wednesday. The shooter hasn’t been arrested as investigators work to determine if the shooting was justified under Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law.

Matt’s family said the man who allegedly shot him is named James Gainvors.
NBC2 tried to talk to the Gainvors family to get their side of the story but they refused to comment on the situation.
Matt’s sister Jennifer said, “I just don’t understand that you can shoot and kill somebody, have it witnessed, have it on video and still be sleeping in your bed while my brother is in a morgue drawer.”
About a hundred people gathered outside Matt’s Port Charlotte home on Friday night. They held a vigil, shared memories, lit candles and released balloons.
Matt’s family said they want to remember him for who he is, not how he died.
Arlina Romero is Matt’s sister-in-law.
“We’re honoring Matt and trying to replace the bad memories with the good memories,” she said.
Matt Hanson, 39, was a true Florida boy, die-hard Gators fan, Dr. Pepper lover, but most importantly — Matt loved his family.
“He just made you laugh no matter what, he was the entertainment at the family functions,” said Matt’s sisters. “Matt was always the life of the party even when there wasn’t a party.”
His family made shirts to remember him but said it’s ironic because you’d never see him wear one. Matt was always shirtless and wearing a ball cap.
“You could never catch him in a shirt, he said he was too good for them,” said Matt’s daughter, Scarlet.
Matt leaves behind a big family. He has three children and many nieces and nephews.
Scarlett is 15 years old. She wrote a letter to Matt that was read at the vigil. Part of the letter said, “I just want Matty back. I never got to say goodbye.”
Matt’s family said they’re confident that they will get justice. They want the hashtag #justiceformatt to go viral everywhere.
