FORT MYERS, Fla. — Shocking, quiet, and somber. Those are some of the words Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) students used to describe the atmosphere on campus after the body of Graham McGrath was pulled out of the campus lake.

“It’s a little bit morbid today,” Daniel Ortiz said. “It’s still a bit daunting that it happened right outside of my apartment.”

Fellow classmates and friends of McGrath have started a memorial of flowers and candles next to Lake Como.

“It’s definitely a somber day on campus, it got acknowledged on every single one of my four classes that I went to today so I’m glad that the community is openly talking about the loss of one of our own community members,” Frankie McMahon said.

McGrath was boating with 13 people on Wednesday when he fell overboard. Rescue teams searched the lake for over 12 hours and finally found McGrath’s body, 100 yards from shore.

McGrath was in a fraternity on campus. His brothers told ABC7 they need time to process the immense loss. Other students are coping too.

“I’m involved in Greek life and I hear that he’s involved in the Greek life community as well so it could’ve been any one of us. My heart goes out to the student’s family at this time, that must’ve been very difficult,” McMahon said.

Ryan Alfano said over 16 thousand students attend the university, and almost everyone has heard about the tragedy.

“I was at the gym today and you could kind of tell everybody kind of knows what’s going on and the severity, it’s a very quiet day here for sure,” said Alfano. “It’s hard to see something, a fellow student, somebody my age who has a birthday next week… something like that to just happen is just really heartbreaking.”

As family and friends grieve, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate. It’s still not clear how McGrath fell off the boat.

“Everything that we do we are suspicious in nature. And until we prove otherwise factually, we treat everything as if it is,” Sheriff Carmine Marceno said.

Marceno said there were no obvious signs of trauma on McGrath’s body, but they will get more answers about how he died from the medical examiner’s office.

“We will confirm farther down the road what exactly took place, what event caused this,” said Marceno.
