Broadneck field hockey went into this season as the reigning Maryland 4A champions but needed to figure out how to make up for nine graduated seniors from that undefeated squad.
At the midway point of the 2023 season, this year’s team has shown no signs of taking a step back, evident in a 2-1 win over Crofton last week.
“I’m happy with how we are improving day by day,” Broadneck Coach Shannon Hanratty said after the win on Oct. 3. “This season, we knew coming in it was going to be all about figuring out where our pieces fit the best. We’re still playing with things, but everybody’s putting their best foot forward.”
In the second quarter last week in Gambrills, junior Katelyn Kearns redirected a pass past Crofton goalie Ryleigh Osborne to open the scoring, and just after the second half began Kearns assisted junior Raleigh Kerst for what proved to be the decisive goal.
Kylie Corcoran brought the Cardinals within one, but the defense held for the Bruins (9-0).
“We’ve just built on last year,” Kerst said. “It just felt like from the first day we were already connected.”
The last time Broadneck lost a game was Nov. 5, 2021. Since then, the Bruins have rattled off 29 consecutive wins, keeping them atop The Post’s midseason rankings.
