SURF CITY, N.C. — Tim Hobbs has been deputy fire chief of Surf City for the last 10 years. He has plenty of experience patrolling the beaches during the summer and offers visitors pointers to stay safe when temperatures get dangerously high.

What You Need To Know

  • Many areas across the state are under heat advisories
  • Surf City typically sees its hottest temperatures in late July
  • The temperature of the ocean Friday was 84 degrees, which is unseasonably warm

“We’re concerned with heat-related emergencies. Thankfully, with the coastal breeze and people able to immerse themselves in the water, we have a lower percentage,” Hobbs said.

Hobbs warns beachgoers about heat exhaustion and heat stroke every day. He also reminds people its important to be aware of the symptoms of distress.

“That’s headaches, dizziness. You feel like you’re going to faint — moist, pale, ashy skin. All those symptoms I just described. And on top of that add dry, hot skin and you stop sweating and your body temperature once you get over 103, you’re getting into the area of heat stroke, which is very dangerous and can be life threatening,” Hobbs said.

Hobbs also says sunburns are a big part of what makes summers in North Carolina dangerous.

“Hot skin makes it difficult for your body to cool itself,” Hobbs said.

Hobbs says taking precautions before, during and after your stay at the beach are vital to staying safe.

“Hydration. If you know you’re going to be coming and visiting the beach, stay hydrated before your visit, during your visit and after your visit with either a water or a sports drink or something,” Hobbs said.

If you and your family are planning to spend time outdoors, Hobbs says it’s important to take breaks from the sun. He also says to avoid caffeine or alcohol, as they can dehydrate you.
