LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. — Two different investigations are underway after multiple brush fires occurred in Lehigh Acres Wednesday.
The first brush fire occurred on Nora Avenue North. The Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District said they received a call just before 1 p.m. One house was threatened while 3.5 acres burned. The cause has yet to be determined.
The second brush fire was an illegal burn that occurred around 2:30 p.m. on 1061 Beggs Street East. The Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District said an unknown person burned junk near the woods. Approximately two acres of land caught on fire.
Fire Marshals are currently investigating to find out who started the flames and if a citation will be given.
A spokesperson for the Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District said the community should be alert and prepared for brush fire season. She said fires are already starting and dry season hasn’t even begun.
“We’re gonna start seeing less and less rain every day and the cool weather kind of dries everything out and then we start getting these breezes that come through, it’s really just kind of a nasty combination for ripe fire conditions,” said Katie Heck, Public Relations Officer with the Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District.
“It’s really important for people to remember that when they are doing these small yard fires that they might have the breeze that they have and the way that the brush is so dry around the fire it can spread very quickly,” she said.
Heck said another way residents can protect themselves for brush fire season is by cleaning up their yard and making sure there is enough space around their home so if a fire happens, a brush truck can quickly get to it and put it out.
