NORTH NAPLES, Fla. — A Naples pastor and congregation are stuck in the middle of the war in Israel. ABC7 spoke with them about their experience in the Holy Land.
It’s day three of war in the Holy Land.
“They don’t teach you how to deal with stuff like this in the seminary,” said Lead Pastor Alan Brumback of First Naples Baptist Church.
Pastor Brumback and roughly 50 of the church’s congregation have been in Israel since last Monday.
“This is definitely not the trip we had planned out, but boy, is it a test of faith,” said Brumback.
ABC7 FaceTimed Brumback on Monday, and moments before the interview was planned, Pastor Brumback said sirens started going off.
“Literally, just before we started talking, we had to find a place to hunker down. This is what these people who live in this country are dealing with daily. We are just living in it with them right now,” said Brumback.
Thousands are dead, and kidnappings and hostage situations are happening just miles from where Brumback and his church flock are at the moment.
“We are 40 to 50 miles from the really gnarly stuff you’re showing on the news. I think we are safe, but it makes you worry, obviously not knowing if it’s going to come closer,” said Brumback.
Brumback, his wife and their 3 kids are all together.
Two of the churchgoers who went on the trip have been able to get out and are going back home.
“We had two of our members who wanted to leave; they found a way out, and we’ve been trying to help get whoever needs to get out a way out,” said Brumback.
The trapped congregation is hoping to flee on Thursday at some point.
“We’ve been seeing missiles flying at the Tel Aviv airport, so we can only pray God allows us to get out if that’s his plan,” said Brumback.
