Forecast: Another hot one with scattered storms

It’s going to be another scorching hot day today across SWFL, but there will be some rain storms there to help cool some of us down.

We’re already off to a warm start, with temperatures settling into the upper 70s and lower 80s at sunrise. Under clear and sunny skies those temperatures will climb quickly, reaching highs in the mid 90s for most by the afternoon. Factoring in the high humidity, heat index values near and over 110° will be common. Today is another day to be thinking about heat safety — meaning if you plan on spending time outdoors during the heat of the day, take frequent breaks in the shade or the air conditioning, and make sure to stay hydrated.

We’ve already seen some rainfall this morning, as downpours and storms have at times been scraping along our coastline on their way north. Through the rest of the morning storms will gradually build inland. Around lunchtime we’ll look for spotty storms close to US-41 and I-75, giving way to deep inland storms though the late afternoon and early evening. While severe storms aren’t expected a few will be heavy, with torrential rain and frequent lightning. Remember: when thunder roars, head indoors!

After a very similar day tomorrow, we look to turn to a stormier pattern for the back half of the week as deep tropical moisture lifts into the area. This will also help to back our temperatures off a bit, as we settle back to highs in the lower 90s for the late part of the week and the weekend.

Tracking the tropics:
While there are no active storms in the Atlantic at the moment, the NHC will be monitoring a few disturbances later on this week that will move off the coast of Africa for potential development. At this time, there are no threats to Florida for at least the next 7 days.
