Forecast: Still hot with spotty PM storms

It’s going to be another scorching hot day today across SWFL, with only a few storms out there this afternoon to help cool us down.

We’re already off to a warm start, with temperatures settling into the upper 70s and lower 80s at sunrise. Under clear and sunny skies those temperatures will climb quickly, reaching highs in the mid 90s for most by the afternoon. Factoring in the high humidity, heat index values near and over 110° will be common. Today is another day to be thinking about heat safety — meaning if you plan on spending time outdoors during the heat of the day, take frequent breaks in the shade or the air conditioning, and make sure to stay hydrated.

Rain chances will be fairly low overall today. Around lunchtime we’ll look for spotty storms close to US-41 and I-75, giving way to deep inland storms though the late afternoon and early evening. While severe storms aren’t expected a few will be heavy, with torrential rain and frequent lightning. Remember: when thunder roars, head indoors!

After a very similar day tomorrow, we look to turn to a stormier pattern for the back half of the week as deep tropical moisture lifts into the area. This will also help to back our temperatures off a bit, as we settle back to highs in the lower 90s for the late part of the week and the weekend.

Tracking the tropics:
While there are no active storms in the Atlantic at the moment, the NHC will be monitoring a few disturbances in the far eastern Atlantic that will have a low chance to develop as they work westward into next week. At this time, there are no threats to Florida for at least the next 7 days.
