Community cleans trails by San Elijo Lagoon

Trail cleanups are held regularly at the Cardiff Farmers Market, 3333 Manchester Ave., hosted by the market in collaboration with We Clean Trails. CARLSBAD

Kayaking event helps lagoon

The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation will hold its 18th annual Kayak Cleanup & Fundraiser Oct. 12-13. Participants can kayak on the lagoon that is normally closed to boating, while helping to preserve the lagoon habitat by removing trash. There will be four launches each day, starting at 8 a.m. and ending at 2:30 p.m. Children age 6 and older can attend with an adult. The cost is $150 per two-person kayak; proceeds go to lagoon restoration and other projects. Visit batiquitoslagoon.com.

Rotary puts on 42nd Oktoberfest

The Carlsbad Rotary Clubs’ Oktoberfest Fall Festival is from noon to 8 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Carlsbad Strawberry Fields, 1050 Cannon Road. Highlights include German food and music and a Bavarian Biergarten with various beers and wines along with stein-holding and yodeling contests. Attractions include a petting zoo, a corn maze, a kids zone, bounce houses and tractor rides at the marigold field. There will be a German costume contest, a wiener toss challenge and other German games. The fundraiser is hosted by the Carlsbad Rotary Club and Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club for Carlsbad charities. ‘Power of Pink’ event

The Shoppes at Carlsbad celebrates the “Power of Pink” to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month and will host nonprofit Helen Knoll Foundation and its partner Grassroots Health for on-site vitamin D3 screening from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 5. The first 25 participants will receive a free testing kit; others pay $79 (with discount). Free 30-minute “Pink Party” Jazzercise classes are at 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The San Diego Blood Bank will also host a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day in the center’s southern parking lot. Quilter’s Concert set for Oct. 5 at church

A Lutheran World Relief Quilter’s Concert is at 3 p.m. Oct. 5 at St. Mark’s Church, 580 Hilltop Drive. The free concert celebrates the dedication of quilters who made dozens of quilts that will be donated to Lutheran World Relief. Home Garden Show at fairgrounds

German band to play at festival

The German American Societies Oktoberfest celebration runs Oct. 4-6 at 1017 S. Mollison Ave. Highlights include authentic German food and beers on tap along with oom-pah music by the Guggenbach-Buam band from Germany. There will be traditional folk dancing, games and contests. The Masters of Hawaiian Music George Kahumoku, Ledward Kaapana and Jeff Peterson will perform from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at La Paloma Theatre, 471 S. Coast Highway 101. The trio of Grammy-winning musicians bring out the essence of Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukulele music. An Oktoberfest with local brews and German dishes is from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Olivenhain Meeting Hall Grounds, 423 Rancho Santa Fe Road. The Our Song band will play German melodies, European harvest anthems and American pop hits. Put on your dirndl or lederhosen and bring your lawn chairs. Senior Service Council seeks volunteers

The Senior Service Council is looking for reception desk volunteers who can spare three hours per week. Bilingual volunteers are especially needed. Stagecoach Sunday coming up

The annual Stagecoach Sunday will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 6 at the Palomares House,1815 S. Stagecoach Lane. The event features live music by The Way Brothers, a barbecue lunch by Firehouse Que & Brew, stagecoach rides, a kids “corral” with games, beer and wine garden, an auction and a raffle, live animal exhibits and demonstration stations. The event provides funding for the Fallbrook Land Conservancy’s mission of protecting open space. Parking and admission are free. Polo tournament kicks off Oct. 4

The United States Polo Association holds the second Buddy Combs International Arena Polo Challenge on Oct. 4-5 with the USA team competing against the India team at the Lakeside Polo Club, 13800 El Monte Road. Farrah’s Jam to benefit musician on life support

Farrah’s Jam, a concert fundraiser for local musician Farrah Camu, who is on life support, is from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at Mission Bay Resort, 1775 E Mission Bay Drive. Camu suffered a severe brain injury after a sudden cardiac arrest caused by a blot clot and e-bike crash, according to her GoFundMe page. The fundraiser is meant to alleviate some of the financial burden so the family can focus on her recovery. The lineup includes local musicians Divina Jasso, Helena Holleran, Shea Givens, Marelle, Travis Thomas and Devlovv. Humane Society puts on Fur Ball

The San Diego Humane Society will put on its 38th annual Fur Ball from 5 to 10 p.m. Oct. 5 at its main campus at 5500 Gaines St. The dog-friendly fundraising event supports the nonprofit’s efforts to help more than 40,000 animals this year. The stars of this year’s ball are cats Coco and Amore Schwab. Festivities include a cocktail reception with guests and their pets arriving in their finest attire and a gourmet vegetarian dinner with fine wine, prepared by renowned chef Jeffrey Strauss of Pamplemousse Grille along with live and silent auctions and an after-party dance. Annual Walk to Defeat ALS

The 23rd annual Walk to Defeat ALS starts at 10 a.m. Oct. 6 at De Anza Cove, 3000 N. Mission Bay Drive. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. The event raises money and awareness about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Oktoberfest with craft fair supports local schools

EdUCate!’s 15th annual Oktoberfest is from 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 5 at Standley Park, 3585 Governor Drive, in University City. There will be a beer and wine garden, games for all ages and a craft fair, which opens early at 1 p.m. Entertainment includes the traditional Principal’s Challenge, a DJ, a live band and showcases from local dance and sport teams. Del Sol Softball will be serving brats, dogs and burgers. University City High School Baseball will offer pretzels and candy, along with other food vendors. Imaginarium Light Show at outlets

Las Americas Premium Outlets is hosting the Imaginarium Light Show from 6 to 11 p.m. through Nov. 17 at 4211 Camino De La Plaza. The show features a display of more than five million LED lights, which will transform the Southwest Parking Lot into a wonderland. East Village Oktoberfest on Oct. 5

The annual Oktoberfest celebration from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 5 in East Village, 1301 Market St., will have lots of local craft beers on tap, lederhosen and a traditional Bavarian band, as well as DJs with a Latin flair. First Friday Art Walk in La Jolla Village

Italian Film Festival in October

The San Diego Italian Film Festival runs Oct. 1-12 and includes in-person and online screenings of contemporary Italian films such as dramas, comedies, documentaries as well as shorts from its internationally recognized Ristretto Awards competition. The 18th annual event features screenings at the Museum of Photographic Arts at San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park and the Digital Gym at UC San Diego’s Park & Market. The theme of this year’s festival is Core, a play on words between the English meaning and the Southern Italian word for heart. Veterans give concert to support music therapy

Resounding Joy is hosting its sixth annual Living Your Dreams Fundraising Concert from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 5 at a private residence in Scripps Ranch. The outdoor concert features the Sounds of Service band, a group of veterans who have benefited from music therapy who will share their music and stories. Tournament of Bands seeks volunteers

Volunteers are needed to support the 47th annual Mt. Carmel Tournament of Bands, one of Southern California’s largest and oldest high school marching band competitions. The event will include both parade and field show competitions and is planned for Oct. 26 at Mt. Carmel High School in Rancho Peñasquitos. Adults and students are needed for concessions support, parking and traffic control, ticketing, stadium ushering, parade and field show operations support. Training is provided. Fleet Science Center part of Museums for All program

The Fleet Science Center has joined the Museums for All program to encourage people of all backgrounds and financial resources to visit the museum. The access program of the Institute of Museum and Library Services is administered by the Association of Children’s Museums. The program supports those receiving food assistance (SNAP) benefits visiting the Fleet Science Center, 1875 El Prado, in Balboa Park, and allows them gallery admission for a minimal fee of $3 per person with the presentation of a SNAP Electronic Benefits Transfer card at the ticket counter. Stargazing party Oct. 4 at Mission Trails park

Free museum admission for kids

The San Diego Museum Council runs the Kids Free San Diego program Oct. 1-31. Children ages 12 and younger can get free admission with a paid adult to more than 50 museums, aquariums/zoos, gardens, state parks, historic sites and other family-friendly attractions throughout San Diego County, ranging from the USS Midway Museum and Fleet Science Center to Birch Aquarium and San Diego Air & Space Museum, Some locations are free for the entire family or offer pay-what-you-wish admission year-round. Volunteers sought to clear trails

Cuyamaca Rancho State Park’s trails maintenance volunteer unit is looking for volunteers. The group clears trails of brush and fallen tree branches and works on grading on over 80 miles of park trails. Work party days are four hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Free outdoor family movies

Youth tennis players sought

The nonprofit San Marcos Tennis Organization is looking for players for the boys and girls 14 and under, and the boys 18 and under divisions to compete in the USTA Junior Team Tennis League beginning at the end of September. Tips for Growing Roses topic of garden club talk

Tips for Growing Roses in Extreme Weather will be the topic of a presentation Oct. 4 in the Azalea Room at the Gloria McClellan Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. The speaker is Beth Van Boxtel, a master gardener who teaches home gardeners about growing roses. A fingertip lunch is at noon followed by the business meeting at 12:30 p.m., and program at 1:45 p.m. Visit californiagardenclubs.com/vistagardenclub.

Fire stations hold open house

The Vista Fire Department celebrates Fire Prevention Month with a series of educational open houses from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturdays in October at various fire stations throughout Vista. The stations will offer a hands-on experience with live demonstrations, interactive tours and the chance to meet firefighters. Here are upcoming open houses:

  • Oct. 5: Fire Station No. 2, 1050 Valley Drive
  • Oct.12: Fire Station No. 4, 2121 Thibodo Road
  • Oct. 19: Fire Station No. 5, 2009 S. Melrose Drive
