An 8-year-old girl is dead after she was shot in the head Saturday night in Portage Park, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Officials said a man known to police approached a group and took out a handgun in the 3500 block of North Long Avenue at about 9:40 p.m. He then shot the girl in the head. She was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, where she was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

Police said another man at the scene got into a fight with the man who shot the girl, attempting to disarm him. During the struggle, police said the gunman was shot in the face. He was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, according to police.

Police said they recovered a weapon at the scene and are investigating the shooting.
