Another week, another slew of games in which the top half of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference can’t help but beat up on itself. Still — as is often the case as the postseason approaches — no WCAC team is trending in a more positive direction than St. John’s, which thumped Good Counsel early in the week and held off a late push by Paul VI on Sunday afternoon to take the conference’s second-highest spot in the rankings.
For public schools, most programs either concluded their regular season slates this week or have just a handful of games left before the playoffs begin. Four of those programs — Hammond, South River, Briar Woods and Bethesda-Chevy Chase — rose after spotless weeks, while Woodgrove and Osbourn Park, the area’s top two public schools, also thrived. Osbourn Park handled experienced Cedar Run District rival Gainesville for the second time this season, while Woodgrove set the Virginia single-game record for three-pointers against Loudoun Valley as senior Angelina Nice and sophomore Lyla Brown contributed 10 of the team’s 18 threes.
After the big night, the Wolverines’ 182 threes are the sixth most in a season in Virginia High School League history — with, presumably, plenty of games left to catch Fort Defiance’s record of 256 set in the 2021-22 season.
