The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference is one of the best prep leagues in the country. Sometimes, though, its depth leads to a week like this past one, where every team except top-ranked Bishop McNamara picked up at least one loss.
That leaves a handful of public schools as the week’s biggest winners, with Woodgrove rising all the way to No. 3, given its strong nondistrict schedule and gaudy blowouts. The Wolverines’ 75.8 points per game are comfortably the most by a Northern Virginia public school in the past five seasons.
Elsewhere in Northern Virginia, No. 11 Osbourn Park and No. 18 Briar Woods each picked up wins against state title contenders at the Athletes for Awareness event in the Richmond area. Further north, Hammond becomes Maryland’s top-ranked public school with a pair of blowout wins coupled with Bethesda Chevy-Chase’s first local loss.
A re-racked WCAC sees Paul VI, Good Counsel and Elizabeth Seton occupy the No. 4 through No. 6 spots as circular performances this week (Good Counsel beat Paul VI, Paul VI beat Elizabeth Seton, Elizabeth Seton beat Good Counsel) speak to the conference’s parity. They occupy the conference’s second rung for the time being, as all three boast winning records against fellow Top 20 teams.
