The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office and partner law enforcement agencies collected 152 unwanted firearms at a gun safety event in Vista on Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The event, which took place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m at the North County Regional Center, offered gun owners the opportunity to exchange a handgun, rifle or shotgun for a $100 gift card, and an assault weapon or ghost gun for a $200 gift card. The agencies also gave out free cable locks and gun safety lock boxes.
The weapons collected Saturday will be destroyed unless they are linked to a crime or found to be stolen. Firearms involved in a crime will be referred to the appropriate law enforcement agency and the original owners of stolen guns will be contacted, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The gun safety event was put on by the Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office, the Oceanside Police Department and the city of Vista.
