Here’s how San Diego athletes fared in Friday’s Olympics – San Diego Union-Tribune

A daily look at athletes from San Diego County competing at this summer’s Olympics:

Friday’s results

Beach volleyball: Chase Budinger (La Costa Canyon High School) and partner Miles Evans lost 2-0 (21-18, 21-11) to Adrian Gavira and Pablo Herrera of Spain.

BMX cycling: Chula Vista resident Alise Willoughby qualified for the eight-woman final but finished sixth.

Golf: Xander Schauffele (Scripps Ranch High School, SDSU) shot a 6-under 66 in the second round to move into a three-way tie for first at 11-under with Hideki Matsuyama and Tommy Fleetwood.

Rowing: Azja Czajkowski (Bonita Vista High School) and partner Jess Thoennes finished fourth in the women’s pairs final behind the Netherlands, Romania and Australia.

Sailing: Hans Henken (Coronado High School) and partner Ian Barrows finished fourth in the medal race, which was enough to move up one spot in the overall standings for the bronze medal in the 49er class.

Tennis: John Peers and Matthew Ebden of Australia beat the U.S. team of Taylor Fritz (Torrey Pines High School) and Tommy Paul 7-5, 6-2 in the doubles semis at Roland-Garros.

Track and field: Shanieka Ricketts (SDSU) was second in her qualifying group in the women’s triple jump at 47-5¾ to advance to the final. Nia Akins (Rancho Bernardo High School) finished second in her prelim heat of the 800 meters in 1:59.67 to advance to Sunday’s semifinals. Harrison Williams (Chula Vista training center) is in eighth place with 4,432 points after Day 1 of the decathlon.

Volleyball: Garrett Muagututia (Francis Parker) and the U.S. men beat Japan 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 18-25, 25-19) to finish undefeated in group play and advance to Monday’s quarterfinals.

Saturday’s action

Basketball: Isaiah Pineiro (USD) and Puerto Rico take on the U.S. men in the conclusion of group play in Lille. Isalys Quinones (Otay Ranch High School) and the Puerto Rico women play China.

Golf: Schauffele is in the final pairing for the third round of the men’s tournament at Le Golf National outside Paris.

Soccer: The U.S. women, with San Diego Wave defender Naomi Girma and forward Jaedyn Shaw, face Japan in the quarterfinals in Paris at 6 a.m. PDT. Canada, with Wave goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan, get Germany in Marseille. New Wave signing Delphine Cascarino and France host Brazil in Nantes.

Tennis: Fritz and Paul play for the bronze medal against Tomas Machac and Adam Pavlasek of Czechia.

Track and field: Ricketts, who has finished second twice at World Championships, goes for her first Olympic medal in the triple jump final. Williams competes in Day 2 of the decathlon.

Water polo: Alex Bowen (Santana High School) and the U.S. men continue group play against Montenegro. The two teams met at UCSD on July 14 in an exhibition game won by the visitors in a shootout.
