Herr’s is once again allowing a few lucky snack lovers to bring their potato chip ideas to life, while benefitting local businesses in the process.

The Chester County-based company has launched its third annual Flavored by Philly contest. Now through Tuesday, Nov. 14, Herr’s is accepting online submissions for unique chip flavors inspired by Philadelphia-area small food businesses.

Once the nomination period closes, a panel of judges will review the submissions and narrow them down to three finalists. The top flavors will then be sold throughout Philadelphia next summer, so fans can sample them and vote for their favorite.

The person with the winning idea will win $5,000 and a year’s supply of Herr’s chips. The small business represented by the winning flavor will receive $10,000. The first person to submit a flavor inspired by a particular business will have ownership over that idea for the contest, even if similar submissions follow.

Small business owners can also nominate themselves, but if they win they will simply receive $10,000.

Herr’s launched the most recent Flavored by Philly contest last fall, introducing the small business aspect in order to benefit local chefs, bakers and entrepreneurs. Herr’s received about 1,500 flavor submissions that included everything from cannoli to pierogi.

The latest winning flavor, announced in August, was tomato pie from Corropolese Bakery, a family-owned Italian deli with locations in Norristown, Audubon and Royersford. The bakery was nominated by longtime customer David Gilmartin of Royersford. Corropolese beat out its two fellow finalistsKorean BBQ wings inspired by Mike’s BBQ (1703 S 11th St.) and roast pork sandwich inspired by John’s Roast Pork (14 E Snyder Ave.).

Herr’s first-ever Flavored by Philly contest wrapped in 2022, with the long hots and sharp provolone flavor emerging victorious. The company reported a 50% increase in votes between the first and second contests.

“As we launch the third Flavored by Philly contest, we are proud to support and honor the local small food businesses that began the way our family’s company began,” Ed Herr, chairman and CEO of Herr’s, said in a release.
