If Elo-Rivera wants brisker meetings, virtual comments aren’t culprit – San Diego Union-Tribune

Re “Elo-Rivera, Hoskins spar over housing” (Sept. 27): Sean Elo-Rivera says he wanted to eliminate virtual comment because “there’s been some real slowdowns in our ability to get things done.” The council president needs a lesson in time management. If meetings become unwieldy, start by focusing on segments that run longest.

Public comments wouldn’t top that list. Staff presentations, all dull-as-dirt slideshows with texts read aloud by rote, typically run 20 minutes or longer. Council members begin their remarks by thanking everyone in creation, and then most of them lecture like preachers at pulpits. Occasional “special ceremonies” for departing city officials bog down proceedings with effusive praise and insider repartee.

Time limits are only set on public speakers. Mr. Council President, you must show bold leadership. If you set reasonable time limits on all participants, your meetings will run more efficiently, and you will demonstrate that you can walk your equity talk.
