Jon Stewart slams Donald Trump for trash talking about workers

Jon Stewart used Monday’s episode of The Daily Show to pick apart all the reasons that people have given for supporting former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris in the November presidential election.

One of the arguments he looked at was that Trump is the working American’s candidate. Stewart then showed a clip of Trump saying at a rally in Erie, Pa., that he disliked giving overtime to employees.

“I gotta say, every time Trump talks about workers, it’s like watching A Christmas Carol in reverse,” Stewart cracked.

Charles Dickens’ classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, a cold, rich man, who is deeply affected by seeing how the less fortunate live and changes his ways, has been adapted to film and television countless times. In a 1999 film adaptation, for example, Patrick Stewart plays Scrooge with Richard E. Grant as his oppressed employee Bob Cratchit. A 2019 FX miniseries stars Guy Pearce and Andy Serkis, was written by Peaky BlindersSteven Knight, and is now streaming on Hulu.

“Donald Trump is the champion of hard working men and women. He’s behind every kind of worker, from auto to sex,” Stewart said mockingly.

Stewart also noted that the former president has been lauded as someone who supports free speech, although he has spoken against that cause. The award-winning host reacted to a Rolling Stone report from earlier this month that Trump would like to punish late-night TV hosts.

“Isn’t being on basic cable at 11 p.m. punishment enough?” Stewart said.

Earlier this month, comedian Kathy Griffin, who famously clashed with Trump in the past, told Entertainment Weekly in all seriousness that she thinks Stewart should be concerned if there’s a second Trump term.

“He’s going to pick us off, one by one, like bowling pins, and I’m not kidding and I’m not being paranoid,” said Griffin, whose My Life on the PTSD-List tour is about the fallout from the gory 2017 image her holding a facsimile of Trump’s head.

The Daily Show airs weeknights at 11 p.m. ET/PT on Comedy Central and the next day on Paramount+.
