A Kane County sheriff’s deputy was critically injured Monday morning after his police vehicle was struck head on by a pickup truck pulling a loaded trailer in Hampshire Township, near Pingree Grove, officials said.

The on-duty deputy was driving southbound on Route 47, just south of Plank Road, about 6:55 a.m. when the driver of a northbound Dually Dodge Ram truck with a trailer crossed into his lane while attempting to stop in traffic, a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report said.

A medical helicopter was called in to transport the deputy to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where they were listed in critical condition. The deputy was not identified.

Three people were driving in the pickup truck, and at least one was taken to Ascension St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elgin for treatment of unknown injuries, the report said.

The crash is being investigated by the Illinois State Police.
