LCEC announces nearly 10% decrease in electricity rates

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Many people in Southwest Florida will start paying less for electricity beginning June 1.

The Lee County Electric Cooperative (LCEC), announced a rate reduction of 9.8% just as the summer season begins.

“I normally pay about $200 a month,” said Natalie Nauss-Aldrich.

“During the summer, probably around $200,” added Alyssa Dunbar.

“Probably around $350-ish,” Jordan Bloemker said.

The power bill, for many families, is the biggest utility expense every month.

Heading into the hot summer season the bill is only getting bigger.

“It’s a lot of money,” Dunbar said.

Before that summer sun singes a hole in your wallet, there’s a cool relief on the way.

LCEC customers will pay nearly a tenth less for electricity in the coming months.

“I would love to save money on it,” Nauss-Aldrich said.

It’s part of a Power Cost Adjustment (PCA). That’s a fancy term for saying LCEC is lowering your bill because they’re paying less for electricity.

LCEC purchases its power from Florida Power and Light (FPL). They’re a non-profit and don’t make any money on the actual power part of your bill.

So how much will this nearly 10% savings mean in dollars?

Roughly $14.50 for even 1,000 kWh used.

“That can put gas in the car. It could be something for a dinner or something,” Nauss-Aldrich said.

“It’s great, but that money is just going to go towards another bill,” Dunbar added.

If you’re in the other boat as an FPL customer, don’t worry, you’re saving money too.

In May, the rate dropped $4.73 for every 1,000 kWh used. FPL is looking to lower rates by another $3.95 in July.

“I’ll take it. I’ll take anything I can get when it comes to saving,” said Dunbar.

LCEC customers will see the savings starting June 1, with the new rate reflected on their July bill.

If you have FPL, you’ll have to wait for the decrease to be approved
