LEE COUNTY, Fla. — The Lee County NAACP has assisted the family of Christopher Jordan, who was shot and killed at his home by a Fort Myers police officer on Dec. 1, in filing a federal civil rights complaint.

A Fort Myers Police Department (FMPD) officer shot and killed 57-year-old Christopher Jordan at his Stella Street home on the night of Dec. 1.

After barricading himself inside the home for 45 minutes, Jordan walked up to a window and showed officers a gun. An FMPD officer then shot him.

According to the Lee County NAACP, Jordan did not hurt anyone and was not a threat when he died.

The NAACP said no one was in danger of immediate harm, and no one was inside the home when police arrived.

The release states that people say Jordan was not a violent person. Witnesses say they never saw him with a weapon.

The NAACP believes a mental health professional should have been involved.

The release said FMPD had prior knowledge of nonviolent confrontations at the same address and wisely declined involvement.

The NAACP assisted the family in filing a Federal Civil Rights Complaint on Tuesday, Dec. 5.

The organization wants a federal investigation separate from FDLE.

Per department policy, the FMPD officer involved in the shooting is on paid administrative leave.

“The Lee County NAACP does support the FMPD and Chief Jason Fields. However, we remain vigilant against any historical re-occurrences of violence used by law enforcement against blacks or anyone, unjustifiably or unnecessarily,” the release said.
