Re “What happened to banning rodeos? After outcry, its chief San Diego council proponent moves forward — sort of.” (Aug. 22): I applaud Councilmember Kent Lee for taking a stand against animal cruelty in rodeos! This isn’t about preserving culture — it’s about greedy corporations exploiting animals for profit. The Padres and C5 rodeo company have shamelessly lobbied City Council members ever since the rodeo ban was proposed, desperately trying to protect their bottom line. C5 even hired South Strategies, a powerful lobbying firm, to orchestrate a cynical PR campaign centered on “culture and tradition” while completely ignoring the suffering of innocent animals.
I implore the other council members to see through this transparent attempt at manipulation. My council member, Stephen Whitburn, whose district includes Petco Park, has been disturbingly silent on this critical animal welfare issue. He must break his silence and work with Kent Lee to pass this vital ordinance!
