Del Mar Summer Wine Fest

The fifth annual Uncorked: Del Mar Summer Wine Fest is from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. The event features more than 100 wines and bubblies from around the world along with “outside the bottle” options such as seltzers, meads and canned cocktails. There will be live music, food trucks and the horse races. Early admission at 1 p.m. costs $85, including early tasting with a smaller group and pours from select wineries. General admission at 2 p.m. is $70. Both tickets include wine tasting and all-day admission to the track. Del Mar Racetrack hosts Tacos & Tequila Festival

The Del Mar Racetrack will present a Taco & Tequila Festival on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. Enjoy tasty tacos from a wide variety of San Diego’s top vendors and restaurants, special tequila drinks and sampling. Enjoy both live music and a DJ throughout the day and shop at specialty vendors all while trackside for live horse racing. Each ticket includes five drink tickets, choose from small tequila drinks including Margaritas & Palomas and/or 5 oz. brew tasters from a selection of craft brews and more.

Del Mar racing season continues

The Del Mar racetrack 2024 season opened July 20 and runs through Sept. 8. First post daily is 2 p.m. until Aug. 31 when the first post moves to 1:30 p.m. First post on Fridays is at 4 p.m. (exceptions being Aug. 16, Aug. 23, Aug. 30, and Sept. 6 when the first post shifts to 3 p.m.). Helen Woodward’s In-PAWson Surf Dog lessons are back

The dog days of summer are here and with them comes everyone’s favorite PAWter sport – dog surfing. For those who have ever wondered if their pup might get a good wag out of the waves, Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Surf Dog classes have returned to Del Mar Dog Beach. Water-loving woofers can try their paw at the sport and get prepped for the Center’s annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon coming up this Sept. 8.

Dog Surfing lessons are $50 per session, per SurFur. (All proceeds support the pets and programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center.)The first of three sessions was held July 28 at Del Mar Dog Beach. Solana Beach to hold Bilingual Game Day

City of Solana Beach Parks and Recreation in cooperation with Solana Beach Community Connections (SBCC) invites all to a Games Day Thursday, Aug. 8 from noon to 2 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. This free event will take place at La Colonia Community Cener at 715 Valley Avenue, Solana Beach.Bring a friend. Spread the word. Participants will be able to choose from a variety of games to play: Loteria, Scrabble, Dominoes, Uno, American Mahjongg, and Corn Hole. In addition, Let’s Play a Game Foundation will be there to introduce participants to a variety of new games.Registration is requested for refreshment planning. Beach Blanket Movie Night in Solana Beach

The City of Solana Beach and the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission will host the 18th annual Beach Blanket Movie Night (BBMN) event on Saturday, Aug. 10, 6 p.m. at Fletcher Cove Park. This family-friendly event is free and open to the public. The evening begins with live music by Jackstraws Surf Band, followed by the feature presentation “The Little Mermaid”.

BBMN offers plenty of refreshments (pizza, popcorn, cookies, and brownies) and a free giveaway with prizes, including a Firewire surfboard, beach cruiser bicycle, wetsuits, gift cards and more. Refreshment tickets will be available inside the park. Cash only for food and refreshments, no credit cards.

All proceeds from BBMN will be used to benefit future Solana Beach Parks and Recreation projects or events. Bring a blanket, pack a picnic.Attendees are encouraged to arrive car free.

Chase Morrin Trio to perform ‘Tribute to Wayne Shorter’ jazz concert

The Chase Morrin Trio will host a free Wayne Shorter tribute concert celebrating jazz saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter at 5 p.m. Aug. 4 at Tio Leo’s Mexican Restaurant, 5302 Napa St., San Diego. Morrin, an acclaimed jazz pianist who grew up in San Diego’s Carmel Valley, is a graduate of the New England Conservatory and Harvard. He now lives in Boston. Batiquitos Lagoon: ‘The Snakes We Live With’ presentation

Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad will hold a presentation on Saturday, Aug. 10 at 10 a.m. titled “The Snakes We Live With” by Bruce Ireland and Allen Chornak with their gang of volunteers who relocate snakes from residences to more appropriate habitat. Meet some of their favorite venomous and non-venomous snakes, including recent rescues from the local reptile community. This free, family event is good for ages 4 plus. Coastal Roots Farm hosts Farm Film & Music Series

Coastal Roots Farm, a nonprofit, organic community farm and education center inspired by Jewish values in Encinitas, hosts its annual summer Farm Film & Music Series, designed to bring community together around shared values to protect people and the planet. Coast to Crest Challenge under way

The Coast to Crest Challenge starts its eighth year this month for hikers to sample San Dieguito River Park’s trail network by finishing a series of five hikes, organized by the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy.  The deadline to complete this year’s series is June 30, 2025. Visit sdrvc.org.

Animal shelter offers pet loss support

The Rancho Coastal Humane Society has a Pet Loss Support Program with free, one-on-one, 20-minute telephone consultations for people who recently lost pets or are saying goodbye to their pets or have pets suffering from major illnesses. Upcoming sessions are from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 3 and Aug. 17. Inquiries must be made no later than 11 a.m. the day before the session you want. Enrollment opens for conservancy program

The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy is accepting enrollment for its 2024-25 season of Exploring Our Sense of Place, a series of seven guided hikes exploring the watershed’s natural history. The hikes explore areas that are not accessible to the public and are led by experts in the fields of wildlife, geology, Native Americans, birds, native plants and the ecology of wetlands. Professional and emerging artists are invited to apply for juried exhibitions in Encinitas. Artists who create two- and three-dimensional artwork and live or work in San Diego County may apply. There are no fees to apply and no commissions on any artwork sales. Exhibitions will be on view for approximately four months in 2025 and include an artist reception with Art Night Encinitas. Only complete applications submitted by the deadline will be considered. Artists creating two-and three-dimensional works in a variety of media are welcome to apply for a solo exhibition that will be held at one of two art spaces in Encinitas. CaddyHack Golf Festival

Guild holds annual basket-making class

The Misti Washington Gourd & Basket Guild holds its annual Basket Class Day featuring basket- and gourd-making classes from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 4 at the San Dieguito Heritage Museum at Heritage Ranch, 450 Quail Gardens Drive. The classes range from making a recycled newspaper basket and gourd embellished with pine needles to a twined basket over a bottle, a basket embellished with Dracaena Draco and a woven door basket. Dink For Dogs Pickleball fundraiser

The Rancho Coastal Humane Society is hosting its first Dink For Dogs Pickleball Tournament Fundraiser for the Animals from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 3 sponsored by Jimbo’s at the Bobby Riggs Racket and Paddle Club, 875 Santa Fe Drive, Encinitas. Check-in is from 4:30 to 5 p.m. followed by the pickleball round robin with competitive and social play options from 5 to 6:15 p.m. and the awards ceremony and announcement of auction winners between 6:15 and 7 p.m. Entry fees are $85 per player for the mini competitive tournament; $150 for doubles teams in the mini competitive tournament; and $85 for social open play. Free music education events

The La Jolla Music Society will offer free learning and engagement activities from July 26 to Aug. 24 as part of the SummerFest 2024 at The Conrad in La Jolla, including open rehearsals, artist lounges, encounters, coaching workshops and musical preludes that are all open to the public. The theme is “Inside Stories” and the festival will include 21 performances and 50 free education activities over four weeks.
