On Sept. 28 at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla, Ballet Collective San Diego (BCSD) will present RESONANCE, a melodic evening of diverse contemporary ballet works by local choreographers Tylor Bradshaw, Reka Gyulai, Holly Meacham, Whitney Edwards, and Emily Miller, and featuring guest choreographer Holly Curran from New York’s Metropolitan Opera.

Emily Miller, Encinitas native and owner and director since 2013 of the Encinitas-based Performing Arts Workshop dance studio, leads BCSD which was founded by Carmel Valley resident Jenny Asseff.

The evening features diverse dance works and sounds intended to appeal to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. The performances will be choreographed to a wide range of musical offerings, several played live by The Hausmann Quartet, which has established itself as an integral part of the cultural life of Southern California since its arrival in San Diego in 2010, according to a news release.

The members of the Hausmann Quartet – violinists Isaac Allen and Bram Goldstein, violist Angela Choong and cellist Alex Greenbaum – are faculty artists-in-residence at San Diego State University where they teach, organize chamber music programs and visit local schools to offer concerts and clinics.

“The Hausmann Quartet is a wonderful group of musicians, and I’m so excited to be able to collaborate with them,” said Miller, who choreographed two new works for this performance, in the news release.

“Live music elevates the experience of both performing artists and audiences,” Miller said. “For dancers particularly, it’s a special kind of bliss to be able to dance to live music in a world where so much of performance is recorded.”

Founded in 2001, BCSD is a nonprofit platform for professional dancers in San Diego where they can train at no cost and create work. Miller said this will be BCSD’s fifth performance and third at the Conrad.

“San Diego is home to innovative and incredible artists,” Miller said in the news release. “Each of the choreographers and dancers in Ballet Collective has a unique physical story to share with audiences. I am so honored to be able to help present these voices on The Conrad’s beautiful stage this year.”

Show times Sept. 28 are at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center is located at 7600 Fay Avenue in La Jolla.
