When Iredell County deputies went to serve 10 warrants on Jessie Michael Teno on Wednesday, he allegedly attacked them with a crowbar, according to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

While fighting with Teno, one of the deputies shot the suspect, the sheriff’s office said. Both Teno and a deputy were injured in the struggle, according to the sheriff’s office. Both were treated and released from a hospital Wednesday.

“During the struggle with the deputy, the suspect was shot. Even after being shot, the suspect continued to fight with the deputy,” the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies eventually took Teno into custody and began treating the gunshot wound as EMS arrived, the office said.

The sheriff’s office said the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will look into the shooting, which is a common practice when a deputy or police officer is involved in a shooting.

The deputy will be on administrative leave during the investigation, the sheriff’s office said.

In addition to Teno’s 10 existing warrants, which include felony larceny and drug charges, he faces new charges for assaulting a government official, resisting arrest and damage to property.

Teno is being held in the Iredell County Detention Center on a $309,000 bond.
