As Hurricane Idalia made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region Wednesday morning, communities saw Category 3 winds and storm surge up to 8 feet. Many people lost their homes and businesses or have a lot of damage to fix.
As the recovery begins, a nonprofit based in Marco Island is on the ground in Northern Florida to help people who were hit the hardest.
Marco Patriots has crews in areas like Steinhatchee, a small town with hundreds of residents. The community is known for fishing, scalloping and its “Old Florida” feel.
Volunteers told ABC7 they’re seeing a strong response from the state and federal government and their goal is to help in areas that aren’t seeing as much assistance.
They’re working to coordinate a hot meal service for people in need.
Marco Patriots have responded to many disasters in Southwest Florida and around the country and say they’re able to feed thousands a day.
