Master Gardeners to present two-part Spring Garden Expo, May 4 and 18

The Spring Garden Expo, presented May 4 and May 18 by the University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Program of San Diego County, will offer two days of education, inspiration and camaraderie for gardening enthusiasts and community members.

Day 1, “Let the Young Buds Bloom,” will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 4 at Home Depot Lemon Grove, 7530 Broadway in Lemon Grove.

Day 2, “Grow, Sow, Shop,” will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 18 at College Area Community Garden: Zura Way and Montezuma Road in the College Area.

Highlights will include:

Gardening talks and demonstrations: Topics presented by knowledgeable Master Gardeners may include plant care, pest discovery and management, composting with worms, container gardening, sustainable landscaping, attracting pollinators and wildlife for biodiverse gardens, improving soil health, propagation techniques, and more.

Crafts: Hands-on activities suitable for all ages. Participants will have the opportunity to make personalized garden-themed crafts for their own outdoor spaces.

Free tool sharpening (Day 2 only): Bring one gardening hand tool for complimentary sharpening services provided by expert volunteers.

Garden sales (Day 2 only): Browse through a selection of high-quality plants, hand-crafted birdhouses and garden art available for purchase at the event.

“We are thrilled to invite the community to join us for two days of learning and celebration in the Lemon Grove and College areas,” said Leah Taylor, UCCE Master Gardener Coordinator of San Diego County. “Our team is dedicated to fostering a love for gardening and environmental stewardship, and this event provides an excellent opportunity for individuals of all skill levels to come together, exchange ideas and grow their gardening knowledge.”

The two-day event is open to the public, and admission is free. Participants are encouraged to come prepared for a day outdoors and to take advantage of the wealth of resources and expertise available onsite.

The Master Gardener Association of San Diego County is a nonprofit organization, and 85 percent of all proceeds support educational outreach services including community, school and demonstration gardens and specific programs to help change the way San Diego gardens. A free gardening hotline staffed by Master Gardeners is available at (858) 822-6910.

The University of California Master Gardener Program extends to the public research-based information about home horticulture and pest management. Master Gardeners are selected and trained by UCCE to volunteer in the community, educating home gardeners on tested gardening methods. The UCCE San Diego County Master Gardener Program was formed in 1983 and has over 350 active volunteers who donate thousands of volunteer hours to the community each year.
