MATLACHA, Fla. — In any ordinary neighborhood in Southwest Florida, waking up to an excavator and loud trucks is a concern, but for the residents on Bayshore Drive — it’s a welcome sight.

“Oh it can get as loud as it wants to get. This is like Christmas,” said Johnnie Glisson of Matlacha.

Glisson lives on the corner of the street that faces the Matlacha Isles. He said since Hurricane Ian, his driveway and most of his yard floods.

“It’s been underwater just about every time. The way the road is build it just dumps it right over on this side. There’s nowhere for it to go,” said Glisson.

The county crews began to fix Glisson’s issue Monday by digging and placing pipes on the road.

“They said they’d be here by rainy season and here they are right at the start of it,” said Glisson.

NBC2 first showed you these concerns last month when we spoke with Mona Blount who also lives on Bayshore Drive. Blount spearheaded the movement that got crews moving on this project.

Lee County told us that work started today and more materials are expected to arrive later this week. The job will be completed by rainy season, most likely June 1 or June 2.

Count on ABC7 to keep you posted on the construction efforts.
