Mia Farrow “completely understands” actors who choose to work with her ex, Woody Allen

The actress and activist, 79, appeared on CBS Sunday Morning on Sunday, Sept. 1, and spoke candidly about Allen, 88, with whom she was in a relationship from 1980 to 1992. Farrow appeared in 13 of the filmmaker’s movies during that time.

After their relationship ended, Allen began dating and later married Farrow’s adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn. Allen was also accused of sexual abuse by another one of Farrow’s daughters, Dylan Farrow, who alleged Allen molested her when she was 7 years old. Allen was never formally charged.

During Sunday’s sit-down, journalist Seth Doane asked Farrow, “Are you able to separate the experience as an actor in those films from the personal trials and tribulations that would follow?” Farrow responded, “Oh yeah, yeah.”

“I completely understand if an actor decides to work with him,” the Rosemary’s Baby star added. “I’m not one who’d say, ‘Oh, they shouldn’t.’ ”

Following Dylan’s sexual assault allegations against Allen, several actors have stated they would not collaborate with the Annie Hall Oscar winner.

Kate Winslet and Drew Barrymore expressed regret over starring in his movies, and artists such as Colin Firth and Greta Gerwig have stated they would never work with the filmmaker again. In 2018 Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Hall donated their salaries earned from Allen movies to the Time’s Up movement.

In April of this year, on his Club Random podcast, comedian Bill Maher called out actors who have made such stances and no longer want to work with Allen. In 2018, Javier Bardem defended the “genius” Allen on the basis that the filmmaker was never convicted of sexual assault, a position the Spanish actor doubled down on in 2021. In 2022, actress Gina Gershon called Allen’s relationships a “family matter” and “not really any of our businesses.”

Farrow has previously said that inviting Allen into her family was “the greatest regret of my life.” In the 2021 HBO docuseries Allen v. Farrow, the actress recounted her ex’s relationships with several of their children including Soon-Yi Previn. Allen now shares two daughters with Previn, whom he married in 1997.

Alongside longtime friend LuPone, her current costar in the Broadway play The Roommate, Farrow also opened up about her marriage to Frank Sinatra and acting roles for older women. “Not many people have had Mia’s life,” said LuPone, 75.

“I’m old, you know?” Farrow responded with a laugh. Of life these days, she added, “I’m very good at doing nothing … I’m endlessly entertaining to myself. I have good friends. I have no complaints.”

Tickets for The Roommate are on sale now.
