Michael Che jokes about doing less work on ‘SNL’ than Colin Jost

Live from New York, it’s Michael Che mastering the art of quiet quitting.

The Saturday Night Live writer and Weekend Update co-host stopped by Monday’s episode of Howard Stern‘s SiriusXM radio program Howard 100 with his partner-in-crime Colin Jost to chat about the venerable sketch comedy. There, Che joked that he often “slept like a baby” while Jost pulled his weight in the writers’ room.

The self-deprecating crack came as he and Jost discussed gradually stepping down as head writers, a post they served between 2017 and 2022. “I feel like I did it at least eight years, maybe more,” Jost said. “We did it together at least five. And then we were then sort of not doing the job for the last couple of years because we were being torn in a lot of different directions.”

“That’s not true,” Che replied. “Colin is really good at it. He’s kind of always stayed a sort of leader in the writers’ room. But I wasn’t doing the job.”

Stern then asked, “Did you go home at night feeling guilty that you were hardly doing anything but Colin was too nice of a guy to tell you, ‘Hey, you’ve got to step up your game’?”

“Guilty? No. Not one bit. I slept like a baby, Howard,” Che joked. “It was fine. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”

The head writer gig was “very undefined,” Jost later explained on the program. “And it varies a lot depending on who the person is doing it. But in some ways, you’re just kind of leading by example. You’re still expected to write at least a couple of sketches a week that are probably going to get on the air. And often you end up having to figure out the cold open later in the week if there isn’t one.”

A laughing Che noted those were “things I never did,” prompting Jost to challenge that assertion and compliment his costar — who isn’t the best at accepting praises.

“It’s not true,” Jost said. “People don’t know what either of us have written. Che has written some of the best sketches that have been on the show in the last 10 to 15 years.”

Che quipped in response, “Are you drunk?”

“You have, you know,” Jost said. “But he wouldn’t say that. And also, he has very good instincts on things and will talk to people and help people with pieces. He doesn’t like to say this, but he does.”

Jost has been with SNL since 2005, joining first as a writer and later becoming a cast member in 2014. Che joined in 2013, also starting as a writer before becoming a cast member the following year. The duo made their debut as Weekend Update co-hosts in the season 40 premiere in 2014 and have been on the post ever since.

The premiere date for SNL’s upcoming landmark 50th season hasn’t officially been announced yet, but it’s believed to be sometime at the end of this month. Until then, Che and Jost are set to headline Peacock’s first-ever live comedy special, Colin Jost & Michael Che Present: New York After Dark, on Sept. 12.
