NORTH TOPSAIL, N.C. — A mom and daughter have paired up on the coast to bring the best there is in sea glass art. Their creations include jewelry, pictures and tons of fun ornaments.

What You Need To Know

  •  The mother-daughter duo have been making sea glass art for the last 10 years
  •  Sue Mixion has said that it’s hard to find sea glass these days, but she has a huge collection from when she first started collecting
  •  The duo do shows around the coastal area to display their art

Kristi Carter and her mom, Sue Mixion, make sea glass art together.

“I can come hang out with my mom all summer and have fun at the beach, because who doesn’t want to be at the beach?” Carter said.

For the last 10 years, the two have been creating art with things they find on North Topsail Beach.

Their art is made from things like driftwood, seashells, sea glass and fun shaped rocks.

“It means being able to hang out with my mom a lot. And that’s really special because she’s a lot,” Carter said.

This all started when Mixion decided to take a jewelry-making class, putting all the sea glass she’d find while walking on the beach to good use.

“Then I just went out on my own and do my own thing,” Mixion said.

They said any art can be specifically designed upon request, nearly anytime of year. They added that the holiday season is usually busy. Carter makes bird families, and Mixion makes ornaments and jewelry.

But it’s more than the art they’re making.

They added one of their favorite parts of their creations is building and maintaining relationships with clients.

“To create something that makes somebody happy, and it makes somebody smile, I mean, it’s a good feeling,” Carter said.

A very special piece of art available for this holiday season is an angel ornament Mixion came up with three years ago.

“It just came out of my brain, and I had lost a good friend, and it was something to do in their memory. And now a lot of people buy these in memory of someone that they love and put it on their tree as a remembrance,” Mixion said.

Their crafts can be found through social media. The best way to contact them about unique orders is through Facebook, though they’re also available on Etsy.
