Movie Review: Two ideas compete for the soul of 'My Old Ass' but sweetness finally wins

They say tripping on psychedelic mushrooms triggers anxiety, paranoia and nervousness. In the case of Elliott, an 18-year-old restless Canadian, they prompt a visitor — her 39-year-old self. Maisy Stella and Aubrey Plaza star in “My Old Ass,” director-writer Megan Park’s coming-of-age tale that doesn’t always work, says Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy. Both parts — the coming-of-age tale and the me-visiting-from-the-future tale — sit poorly in the same movie tone-wise, but Park nails the ending. The R-rated comedy opens in movie theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Friday and wide Sept. 27,
