My Saucony Running Shoes Are Also Great for Travel

As an avid trail runner, I frequently elevate my travels by exploring local tracks. And, when it comes to finding the right pair of running shoes to pack, there are a few key things I prioritize: a balance between durability, traction, and comfort. The terrain can be unpredictable, especially when running a new trail, so I prioritize shoes with rugged, grippy outsoles that can handle wet and dry conditions. Cushioning is also important, but the shoe also can’t be too hard — I need something that can absorb impact, but still lets me feel the ground to course correct on the fly. Stability and a secure fit are also key, especially on technical trails, so I want a shoe with good lateral support and a protective upper to prevent debris from getting inside, all while keeping my feet cool. I’ve finally found the shoe that checks all of these boxes (and more!): the Saucony Hurricane 24.

Saucony Hurricane 24

What really sold me on this shoe is the brand’s special “PWRRUN+” midsole. It gives a soft comfortable feel without being overly squishy, and I like the bit of bounce it adds to my stride. The Saucony Hurricane 24 also has an extended frame that helps with stability and alignment, making my runs feel more controlled, especially on uneven terrain. Plus, the mesh upper is breathable and keeps my feet cool, even during hot days. I was also impressed with how durable the outsole is. The rubber grips well on different surfaces, and after putting quite a few miles on them, they still look and feel solid. The subtle reflective stripes on the shoes are a great way to make your presence known on the trail, especially if you run at dawn or dusk. Additionally, these shoes are super lightweight (under 10 ounces), so packing them on my travels is a no-brainer.

Overall, the Saucony Hurricane 24 has been a great addition to my running gear. This running shoe provides the cushioning and stability I need, and I can rely on it for short and long runs. And, because they come in several muted colorways, I also like to wear them both on and off the trail — I highly recommend giving them a try.

But in case you’re looking for more trail running shoes that serve multiple purposes while traveling, here are 10 of my top picks.

Altra Experience Wild Trail Women’s Running Shoes

REI

Altra shoes are known for their roomy toe boxes with plenty of room for a comfortable run —  both on trails and on gravel. The polyester knit mesh upper looks stylish yet provides breathability to keep your feet cool. One reviewer commented on their versatility, saying, “I tried them out over a couple of weeks, including weekend errands, a quick hike at the state park, and a walk with my boys. They were perfect for exercising and cute enough to wear with a summer dress.” These popular trail running shoes are super lightweight (only 8.7 ounces), so they pack well on your travels, too.

Hoka Speedgoat 6 Women’s Trail Running Shoes

REI

The Speedgoat is one of the most popular Hoka shoes, and this sixth iteration is a lightweight, high-performance trail shoe designed for technical terrain. It has ultralight cushioning for responsiveness, plus an outsole with 5mm lugs for great traction on wet and dry surfaces. And at only 8.2 ounces (in the women’s style) these shoes are adventure-ready right out of the box.

Salomon Speedcross 6 Women’s Trail-running Shoes

REI

These Salomon shoes are great for trail running and hiking because they have the perfect cushioning to handle rocky and steep trails while keeping your feet secure to avoid slipping or sliding. They have excellent grip due to the deep sharp lugs on the outsole, even on wet ground, so running on a new trail isn’t scary. Of course, Salomon’s quick lace closure features a minimalistic strong lace for one-pull tightening, so taking them off or putting them on is a breeze. One reviewer said they like them better than hiking boots, especially for longer hikes. Some colors, like Orchid Petal and Moonscape, are even 25 percent off right now.

Amazon

These lightweight women’s hiking shoes (just 8.9 ounces) feature a breathable mesh and vegan leather upper for comfort and airflow. Adidas Terrex Free Hiker Gore-Tex 2.0 Women’s Hiking Shoes

REI

This shoe from Adidas has a soft, supportive upper and gusseted tongues for a snug, form-fitting comfort that keeps your ankles protected in uneven terrain.
