A man, woman and 2-year-old child were pulled safely from a Naperville retention pond early Tuesday afternoon, according to a police official.

Naperville police and fire responded to a call about 1 p.m. in reference to a car in the water just south of the city’s 95th Street Library, police Cmdr. Michaus Williams said.

Three responding officers entered the water and broke a car window to rescue the three occupants inside. In speaking with the officers involved, “it did not sound like it took long” to complete the rescue, he said.

The occupants refused medical treatment after the incident. Asked if they were harmed in any way, Williams said, “Not that they made us aware of on the scene.”

The responding officers, he added, suffered minor lacerations but were relatively uninjured.

According to Williams, a preliminary investigation suggests the vehicle’s driver was in a parking lot when they mistook the accelerator for the brake, causing their car to go into the water.
